Date:
August 27, 1999
Sree Narayana Guru (1856
- 1928) was a renowned philosopher and social reformer of modern
Kerala. Social justice and universal brotherhood were the cardinal
principles he preached.
The birthday of this great saint is celebrated
on the Chathayam asterism of the Malayalam month of Chingam (Leo).
In a society broken into fragments by casteism and economic inequality,
he emphasised the gospel of 'one caste, one religion and one god.'
Even though the Guru accepted the fundamental principles of the
Vedic religion, he revolted against Brahmin ascendancy, caste discrimination
and sectarianism.
Sree Narayan Guru attained
eternal bliss or 'Samadhi' at Varkala which is today a popular pilgrim
centre. His ashramam, now called Varkala Sivagiri
Ashramam, is 40 km north of Thiruvananthapuram.
Located on a cliff by the Varkala beach is the
famous Janardhana Swamy Temple. Pilgrims
are also attracted by the natural mineral spring on the rocks cliffs
on the Papanasini beach here.
