Carnatic music Carnatic music is the tradition of Indian
classical music that developed in the southern states. It is based
on fully composed musical pieces called Kritis which, like the Italian
sonata, have certain well established structures that fully elaborate
the raga in all its emotional and textual ramifications. Supporting
instruments in a Carnatic music concert are the tambura, the mridangam,
the ghatam, the Ganjira, the violin and the morsing.
The Kriti is a whole concert in the Carnatic tradition
and were composed by saint singers like Thyagaraja, Muthuswamy
Dikshitar and Shyama Sastri. It was Swathi Thirunal,
the musician monarch of the erstwhile state of Travancore, who popularised
Carnatic music in Kerala. The Maharaja
has composed over 400 Kritis in five different languages
